The European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (EJVES) is the official journal of the European Society for Vascular Surgery just as the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) is the official journal of the Society for Vascular Surgery in North America. Both the EJVES and the JVS attract important contributions concerning vascular disease from around the world and have high impact factors. Society members receive the journal of their respective Society as part of their membership. Most see only half of the complete transatlantic picture, however, unless they are members of both Societies or subscribe individually to the other journal. In fact, there is currently little overlap among individual subscribers to EJVES and JVS, although readers may use institutional subscriptions to access both journals.

Authors have to make choices about where to submit their manuscripts to best reach their target audience. Submission to a high-impact “general” medical journal, such as The Lancet or The New England Journal of Medicine, may not achieve this aim for vascular surgeons. In contrast, publication in the EJVES or the JVS will better achieve this, but in the past, the dilemma was that an author could not publish in both journals at the same time, thus accessing only half of the potential transatlantic readership.

That situation changes from this month onwards. The Editors of the EJVES and the JVS are pleased to announce the reciprocal publication of key abstracts. Each month, up to eight key abstracts will be selected by the respective Editors and published synchronously in the other journal. This will alert all of our readers to articles of interest to them. They can then obtain full-text access to the other journal via an institution that subscribes to this service or pay for an online download of the individual article. For the first time, the transatlantic picture is complete.

The abstracts from this month’s issue of the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery can be found on page 907.
